2、emiologydataforlower-extremityarterialthromboembolism(LET)arelimitedandmayresultfromeitheracutelimbischemiaoranacuteexacerbationofcriticallimbischemia.Givenmarkedchangesinbothdiagnosisandtherapyoverthelast2decades,wehypothesizedthatthistimeperiodwouldhavewitnessedreductionsinbot
3、htheincidenceandin-hospitalmortalityofLET.MethodsandResults—Datafrom1988through2007fromtheNationalHospitalDischargeSurveywereanalyzed.AlladmissionsforpatientswithLETwereextracted,andtherespectiveInternationalClassificationofDiseases,NinthRevision,ClinicalModificationcodeswereint
4、ernallyvalidatedforbothLETandacutelimbischemia.Descriptivestatisticswereused.ThevalidityofthecodeswasgoodforidentifyingLETcasesbutpoorforidentifyingacutelimbischemiacasesbecausemanyoftheseacutepresentationswereattributabletocriticallimbischemia.Overthe20-yearspan,therewere1.76mi
5、llioncasesofLET.TheincidenceofLETdecreasedsignificantlyfrom42.4per100000personsbetween1988and1997to23.3per100000personsbetween1998and2007.Thein-hospitalmortalityforLETdecreasedsignificantlyfrom8.28%between1988and1997to6.34%between1998and2007,andmalepatientsachievedgreatermortali
6、tyreductioncomparedwithfemalepatients.Treatmentsforacutelimbischemiashoweddecreasinguseofsurgicalbypassandamputationandincreasingratesofcatheter-basedthrombolysis.Conclusions—Overthe20-yearstudyperiod,therehavebeensignificantreductionsinbothLETincidenceandin-hospitalmortality.Un
