3、ditive,wherematerialisprogressivelyaddedtothepartbeingbuiltinthefinalpositionandshape.Newerprocessescomingoutoftheresearchlaboratoriesareusingengineeringmaterials(hardmetals,ceramics),andarecombiningadditionandsubtractionofmaterialasawaytoshapemorepreciselythepart.Aco

4、mprehensivereviewoftheavailableprocessescanbefoundin[Prinz,Atwoodetal.1997].Additive/Subtractiveprocessesimproveonpurelyadditiveonesintherangeofmaterialstheyhandleandtheaccuracytheyprovide.Theyarealsoprovingtoacceptmoresophisticateddesignwithmultipleandgradedmaterials

5、inasinglepart[Weiss,Merzetal.1997],aswellasintegratingwholeassembliesinonesinglefabricationunit.Thedownsidetoalltheseimprovementsisthatadditive/subtractiveprocessesrequireasubstantiallymoresophisticatedprocessplanningandpartexecutioncontrol.Thisincreaseddifficultyisth

6、eresultoftheuseofCNCmachiningorsimilarmaterialremovalprocessesandtheneedtocoordinateseveraldifferentunitprocesses.Thegoalofthispaperistopresentaplanningandexecutionframeworkforadditive/subtractiveprocesses,outlinetheissuesinvolvedindevelopingsuchanenvironment,andrepor

7、tontheprogressmadeinthisdirectionattheRapidPrototypingLaboratoryatStanfordUniversity.WetaketheSDMprocess[Merz,Prinzetal.1994]developedatStanfordasthecasestudytoapplytheconceptsdevelopedinplanningandexecutionforthisclassofadditive/subtractiveSFFprocesses.Thefirststepto
