3、yarepurelyadditive,wherematerialisprogressivelyaddedtothepartbeingbuiltinthefinalpositionandshape.Newerprocessescomingoutoftheresearchlaboratoriesareusingengineeringmaterials(hardmetals,ceramics),andarecombiningadditionandsubtractionofmaterialasawaytoshapemorepr

4、eciselythepart.Acomprehensivereviewoftheavailableprocessescanbefoundin[Prinz,Atwoodetal.1997].Additive/Subtractiveprocessesimproveonpurelyadditiveonesintherangeofmaterialstheyhandleandtheaccuracytheyprovide.Theyarealsoprovingtoacceptmoresophisticateddesignwithmu

5、ltipleandgradedmaterialsinasinglepart[Weiss,Merzetal.1997],aswellasintegratingwholeassembliesinonesinglefabricationunit.Thedownsidetoalltheseimprovementsisthatadditive/subtractiveprocessesrequireasubstantiallymoresophisticatedprocessplanningandpartexecutioncontr

6、ol.ThisincreaseddifficultyistheresultoftheuseofCNCmachiningorsimilarmaterialremovalprocessesandtheneedtocoordinateseveraldifferentunitprocesses.Thegoalofthispaperistopresentaplanningandexecutionframeworkforadditive/subtractiveprocesses,outlinetheissuesinvolvedin

7、developingsuchanenvironment,andreportontheprogressmadeinthisdirectionattheRapidPrototypingLaboratoryatStanfordUniversity.WetaketheSDMprocess[Merz,Prinzetal.1994]developedatStanfordasthecasestudytoapplytheconceptsdevelopedinplanningandexecutionforthisclassofaddit
