2、elopafunctionalunderstandingoftheirculturalinheritanceaswellastheabilitytocontributeinapositivemannertosociety.Educationoccursthroughthetradi-tionalinstitutionsidentifiedforthatpurpose,throughcontinuinginvolvementinadiscipline,throughcommunityprograms,and,inthebroades
3、tsense,throughpopu-larculture.Communityeducationincreasesbothcitizens'andplanners'knowledgeaboutaplace.Manyplannershaveurgedthatpubliceducationandinvolvementeffortsbein-tegratedthoroughlyintoeachstepoftheplanningprocess.Forinstance,accordingtoWilliamLassey,Ifplanningi
4、stobesuccessful,amajorreorderingofpubliceducation,involvement,andcommunicationprocessesmaybenecessaryExistingscientificknowledgeabouteffectivecommunicationprocesses,andknowledgeabouthumanlearningprovidevastlyincreasedpotentialforpublicunderstanding,appreciation,andinv
5、olvementinsignificantsocietaldecisions.Formaleducationmethodsfordiffusingin-formationandinternalizingknowledgearearchaiccomparedwithpotentiallearningcapabilityofthehu-manpopulation.Itisincreasinglyclearthatlifelongeducationalprocessesareessentialforadequatehu-manadjus
6、tmenttochangingjobrequirementsandlife-styles,buteffectivecommunicationofknowledgecrucialtopublicdecisionmakingisequallyimportantiftheplanetistosurvive(1977,74).Asaresult,communityeducationmustbebothfuture-orientedandongoing.Continuingeducationshouldassistpeopleinmakin
7、glinkagesbetweentheirindividualskillsandinterestsandlargerpublicis-sues.Withoutsuchlinkages,therulesandregula-donsdevelopedtoprotectpeople'shealth,safety,andwelfarewillbetreatedwithsuspicionbythosewhomtheyweremeanttoprotect.Althoughcommunityeducationandcitizeninvolvem
