2、tp://ctlhpan.cityu.edu.hk/haihuapan/AbstractThispaperdiscussesissuesrelatedtoVP-EllipsisandnullobjectconstructionsinMandarinChinese.Itconsistsoftwoparts.First,paceLi(1998),Iarguethatitisnottruethatnonullobjectconstruction(NOC)sentencescanbeanalyzedasVP-ellips
3、isinMandarinChinese,andIwillshowthatthefactthattheinterpretationpatternsoftherelevantsentencesdeviatefromthoseoftheirEnglishcounterpartsisnotbecausethereisnoVP-ellipsisinChinesebutbecauseChinesepronounsandreflexivesexhibitsomespecialproperties.Myclaiminthispa
4、peristhatsomeNOCsentencescanbeinterpretedasVP-ellipsis,andothersneedtobeinterpretedasonesthatcontainanemptypronoun,dependingonwhethertheV-to-INFLraisingoccursornot,which,Iargue,isregulatedbytheexistenceofafocusonthemainverb:onlywhentheverbintheNOCisnotinfocus
5、willtherebeaV-to-INFLmovementinChinese.Hence,ouranalysisintegratesboththeinsightsfromHuang(1988a,b;1991)andXu(2001).Second,paceKehler(1993),Iarguethatitisnottheparallelvs.non-paralleldistinctionbutthesemanticanddiscourseconstraintsofcoordinateconstructionswit
6、htooandye'also'inVP-ellipsisthatcanhelpexplainwhysomeVP-ellipsissentencesareungrammaticalinChinese.Hence,thecoordinationconstructioninneitherEnglishnorChineseisconstrainedbytheso-calledsyntacticconditionwhichisbasedontheparallelvs.non-paralleldistinction,aspr
