2、allyusefulresearchdesigns.Thisperspectivebuildsonourexperiencesasresearchersduringtwentyyearsofinvestigatinghowtechnologiescanbestbeintegratedintohigh-qualityeducationalenvironments.Morespecifically,itbuildsonourincreasedfocus,overthepastsixyears,onunderstandinghowschools,schooldistricts,andstateand

3、nationaleducationalauthoritiesactuallydomovethroughtheprocessofinvestinginandimplementingeducationaltechnologies.Inthispaperwearguethateffectiveevaluationmustproducebothresearch-basedknowledgeofwhattechnologicalapplicationscanworkbestineducationalenvironments,andpractice-basedknowledgeofhowthetechno

4、logyintegrationprocesscanbestbedesignedtomeetlocallydefinedlearninggoalsinschools.Inthefinalsectionofthispaperweoutlinehowanetworkofintermediaryorganizationscouldworktoreview,synthesizeandgeneralizefromlocally-generatedevaluationstudies,producingbroad-basedfindingsthatcouldguidelarge-scalepolicymaki

5、ng.Webelievethatevaluationresearchthatisresponsivetolocalconcerns,constraintsandpriorities,canbestructuredandsynthesizedtoproduceknowledgeabouteffectiveusesofeducationaltechnologythatbothhasahighleveloffacevaliditywithinlocalcommunitiesandinformsthemuchlarger-scaleprojectsofpolicymakers.Investigatin

6、gNewTechnologieswithLocalPartnersOurworkattheCenterforChildrenandTechnologybringsusintocontactwithmanydifferenttypesofinstitutions.Wecollaboratewithschooldistricts,museums,individualteachers,collegefacultymembers,after-schoolprograms,andmanyothers.Theserelationshipstakemanydifferentforms,buttheyalwa
