2、throughtheuseofreflectivejournalsinanMBAprogrammeWhycriticalreflection?Theimportanceofcriticalreflectioninhighereducationisnowwidelyaccepted.Thisappearstocomefromtwomaindirections:firstlyfromconsiderationoftherolethatreflectioncanplayindevelopingprofessionalpractice(Schon1987),asinprofessionssuchas

3、nursing,teachingandsocialwork.ThishasresultedinthedevelopmentofCPDapproacheswhichusetermssuchasthe“reflectivepractitioner”andthe“thinkingperformer”.Secondly,fromexploringtheplaceofreflectioninthelearningprocessasastepinKolb’sExperientialLearningCycleandasamechanismwhichspecificallyunderpinstheprogr

4、essionfromsurfacetodeeptotransformativelearning(Barnett1997).Toconsiderfirsttheroleofreflectionindevelopingprofessionalpractice.MBAstudentswilltypicallyhaveaminimumof2yearsrelevantworkexperiencewhenbeginningtheirstudies,andmanywillhavesignificantlymore.Alllearnersapproachtheirstudieswitha“cognitive

5、structure–aflexiblenetworkofideasandknowledge”(Moon1999a)shapedbypriorlearning.Thiscognitivestructurewillprovidetheframeworkwithinwhichtheywilllocatenewideas,andwillalso,ifdeeplearningoccurs,bechallengedandmodifiedinthisprocess.MBAstudentsarealreadypractisingmanagers,albeitinawidevarietyofdifferent

6、managementlevels,functionsandroles.Perhapsthedifferencebetweentheircognitiveframeworkandthatofthepostgraduatestudentswithoutsuchworkplaceexperienceisthatthepractitionerwillhavebeenexposedtothegapbetween“espousedtheories”and“theoriesinuse”(Schon1987)andwillbeawareofthelimitationsofformaltheoryindeal

7、ingwiththerealityof“messy,indeterminateandproblematicsituations”.Schondescribedtheteachingandnursingprofessionsasthosecharacterisedbysituationswheredeliberationandchoicewasrequiredintheadaptationofformalthe
