3、ignersorcommunistsiswhollyincorrect.IhavedonewhateverIdid,bothasanindividualandasaleaderofmypeople,becauseofmyexperienceinSouthAfricaandmyownproudlyfeltAfricanbackground,andnotbecauseofwhatanyoutsidermighthavesaid.InmyyouthintheTranskeiIlistenedtothe
4、eldersofmytribetellingstoriesoftheolddays.Amongstthetalestheyrelatedtomewerethoseofwarsfoughtbyourancestorsindefenceofthefatherland.ThenamesofDinganeandBambata,HintsaandMakana,SqungthiandDalasile,MoshoeshoeandSekhukhuni,werepraisedasthegloryoftheenti
5、reAfricannation.Ihopedthenthatlifemightoffermetheopportunitytoservemypeopleandmakemyownhumblecontributiontotheirfreedomstruggle.ThisiswhathasmotivatedmeinallthatIhavedoneinrelationtothechargesmadeagainstmeinthiscase.Havingsaidthis,Imustdealimmediatel
6、yandatsomelengthwiththequestionofviolence.SomeofthethingssofartoldtotheCourtaretrueandsomeareuntrue.Idonot,however,denythatIplannedsabotage.Ididnotplanitinaspiritofrecklessness,norbecauseIhaveanyloveofviolence.Iplanneditasaresultofacalmandsoberassess
7、mentofthepoliticalsituationthathadarisenaftermanyyearsoftyranny,exploitation,andoppressionofmypeoplebytheWhites.IadmitimmediatelythatIwasoneofthepersonswhohelpedtoformUmkhontoweSizwe,andthatIplayedaprominentroleinitsaffairsuntilIwasarrestedinAugust19
