2、eriloustotrytoextractsimplelessonsfromsuchacomplexexperience.TheChineseenvironmentissingular:size,factorendowment,policytrajectory,andhistoricalconditionsareallunique.YetbecauseofChina’simportanceanddevelopmentalsuccess,peoplewillcontinuouslydrawconclusionsaboutthemeaningoftheChineseexperience.Intur
3、n,wecandrawlessonsbothfromtheinsightsandfromtheshortcomingsofexistingwaysthatChina’sexperienceisinterpreted.Istartwithsomesimplepropositions:Introduction:FiveParadoxicalPropositions1.Chinaisanimportantmodelandmanydrawlessonsfromitsdevelopmentalsuccess.2.Thereisnoconsensusaboutwhattheselessonsare,and
4、manysupposedlessonsareinconsistent,incompatibleorjustplainwrong.3.DespiteChina’sremarkableinstitutionalcreativity,thereisnospecificinstitutionwhichonecanresponsiblyrecommendshouldbereplicatedinotherdevelopingeconomies.4.InstitutionalinnovationinChinainvolvedmodifyingandstrengthening,aswellasabandoni
5、ng,existinghierarchies.Chineseinstitutionalinnovationwashighlyspecifictotheexistinginstitutionalcontext,andmadeuseofexistingorganizationalcapitalateachstepofthetransitionprocess.5.SincenocountryhasaninstitutionalendowmentsimilartothatofChina,nocountryshouldadaptChina’sspecificexperiences.However,the
6、processofinstitutionalinnovationinChinacanprovidemanylessonsaboutthenatureofinstitutionsandtheinteractionsbetweeninstitutionsandthedevelopmentprocess.DevelopingcountriesmaybeabletostrengthentheircapacityforinstitutionalinnovationbyexaminingChina’sexperience.TheinfluenceoftheChinesemodelhasusuallycom
7、enotintheformofdiscretelessons,butratherasacontributiontotheupdatingofworldviews;thatis,inrevisingtheeconomicideologiesandviewpointsusedtosteerthroughcomplexeconomicphenomena.Awaveofsuchupdatingoccurr
