4、neySeptember30–October1,2010AbstractThisanalysisexaminesthequalityofinAustralianpublicandprivatehospitals,wherequalityismeasuredusinganin-hospitalstandardisedmortalityratio.Usinghospital-leveldata,thedeterminantsofin-hospitalmortalityacrossbothAustralianp

5、ublicandprivatehospitalsareestimatedwithanegativebinomialregressionusinghospital-levelpoolednation-wideABSandAIHWestablishmentandpatientdatafrom2003-04to2006-07.Thelargest(andmostcomparable)publicandprivatehospitalswerefoundtohavesimilaradjustedmortalityr

6、atios.Smallerpublichospitalsweregenerallyfoundtohavegreaterthanexpectedlevelsofmortality.Toestimatetheinteractionbetweenthequalityofcareandthetechnicalefficiencyofpublicandprivatehospitals,theestimatedhospital-standardisedmortalityratioswerethenincludedas

7、regressorsinthestochasticdistancefunctiontoestimatehospitaltechnicalefficiency.AdescriptionofthatanalysisiscontainedinacompanionpaperMeasuringthetechnicalefficiencyofpublicandprivatehospitalsinAustralia.Overall,Australianacutehospitalswereestimatedtohaves
