5、ntofeducation,in2005,57.6percentofthepublicschoolstudentsingradeskindergartentotwelvewereWhite,while42.4percentwereAsian/PacificIslander,African-American,Hispanic,orNativeAmerican(2005).In2004,thepercentofWhiteteachersworkinginpublicschoolwas83percent(USDepartmentofEducation,2005).However,Lo
6、ngIslandisthethirdmostraciallysegregatedsuburbancommunityintheUnitedStates(EraseRacism,2009).Duetothissegregation,teacherswhoattendedLongIslandSchoolsasstudents,thenworkintheschoolsasadults,mayhavelittletonolifeexperiencewithmulticulturalism.Manyoftheseteachersareworkinginpublicschoolsthatse
7、rveraciallydiversestudentbodiesandforthefirsttimehavingsocialinteractionswithpeopleofdifferentraces,ethnicities,andcultures.UsingtheMulticulturalAwarenesstoSchoolEnvironment(MASE)surveydevelopedbyTatumandMorote(2005),thisstudyexploredtherelationshi
