2、alindicatorshasmadesignificantstridesintheUnitedStates.Inmanyquarters,thereisagrowingrecognitionthatnationalprogresscannolongerbejudgedsolelyintermsoftraditionalbusinessandeconomicindicators.Ithasbeenourgoodfortunetoplayaroleinthatprocess.InadditiontotheyearlypublicationoftheIndex,the
3、InstitutehasworkedwithUNICEFincreatingthefirstIndexoftheSocialHealthofChildrenofIndustrialCountries,andwiththegovernmentofCanadaontheIndexofSocialHealthofCanada.Inrecentyears,wepublishedabookwithOxfordUniversityPress,TheSocialHealthoftheNation:HowAmericaisReallyDoing,aswellasareporten
4、titledArts,Culture,andtheSocialHealthoftheNation.Intheyear2000andagainin2002,theInstitutepublishedTheSocialReportAssessingtheProgressofAmericabyMonitoringtheWell-BeingofitsPeople.Thisdocumentisdesignedtoprovidethepublicandpolicy-makerswithaclearerviewofthedailyconditionsofAmericanlife
5、,servingthesamepurposeasthenationalsocialreportsthatareissuedbythegovernmentsofallotherindustrialandmanydevelopingcountries,butnotbytheUnitedStates.ItisourhopeTheSocialReport,tobereleasedagainnextyear,willhelpadvancetheideathattostrengthendemocracy,weneedtoknowfarmoreaboutthestateofth
