2、inimizeDistrictemployees'occupationalexposuretobloodbornepathogens.Bloodbornepathogensrefermostcommonly,intheschoolsetting,to:*HepatitisBVirus(HBV)*HumanImmunodefiencyVirus(HIV)Themostcommonmodesoftransmissionintheschoolsettinginclude:*needlesticks*sharp
3、sinjuriessuchascutsfrombrokenglass*mucousmembranecontact*nosebleed&toothextractionTheintentofOSHAstandardsistominimizeoccupationalexposuretotheseandanyotherapplicablehazardsthatcanoccurintheschoolsetting.Ingeneral,universalprecautionsshallbeobservedtopre
4、ventcontactwithbloodorotherpotentiallyinfectiousmaterials(OPIM).Undercircumstancesinwhichdifferentiationbetweenbodyfluidtypesisdifficultorimpossible,allbodyfluidsareconsideredpotentiallyinfectiousmaterials.Inessence:1.Treatallbloodandbodyfluidsasbeingpot
5、entiallyinfectious.2.Useanappropriatebarrierbetweenanycutsorbodyspills,preferablygloves.3.Washhandsthoroughlywithsoapandwarmrunningwaterbeforeandafterprovidingfirstaidortoiletingstudents.4.Contaminatedneedlesandothercontaminatedsharpinstrumentsarenottobe
6、bent,broken,sharpened,orrecapped.5.Contaminatedreusablesharpinstrumentsaretobeplacedinappropriatecontainers.Thesecontainersare:punctureresistant,labeledand/orcolor-coded,andleakproofonthesidesandbottoms.I.DEFINITIONS1.Biohazard-Aconditionoragentthatconst
