4、ctionThisprojectwasundertakenbetweenJanuaryandJuly2004.Itfocusedonthenatureofexternalexaminingin12institutionsofhighereducation(HE)fromacrosstheUK,threeofwhichwerecollegesofHE,fourofwhichwere‘old’(pre1992)universitiesandfiveofwhichwere‘new’(post1992)universities.Therewere34
5、interviewswithindividualexternalexaminersand12withmembersofstaffwithmanagerial/administrativeresponsibilityforexaminingarrangements(oneofthesetakingplacewithtwopeoplewhosharedthisrole).Inadditioninformationwasgatheredfromatotalof11peoplewhoattendedthreefocusgroups(oneoffive
6、peopleandtheothertwoofthreepeopleeach),15whoattendedasubjectcentre‘expertseminar’andfivewhowerepresentataprofessionaldevelopmentevent(oneofwhomalsoattendedafocusgroup).The34externalexaminerswhowereinterviewedindividuallycamefrom30differentinstitutions.Sixteenofthem(47%)were
7、fromolduniversities,13(38%)fromnewuniversities,four(12%)fromcollegesofHEandone(3%)wasapractitionernotemployedbyanHEinstitution.Twentyweremaleand14female.TheyexaminedacrosstheHEcurriculum(nineinartsandhumanities,teninsocialscienceandbusiness,nineinscience,technologyandengine
8、eringandsixinprofessionalareassuchaslaw,education,socialworkandhealth).Amongstthei
