2、esCityUniversityofHongKongAbstractThispaperexplorestheinteractionalnegotiationofidentityinthedistributionofAIDSpreventionmaterialstogaymeninpublicparksinChinaandhowthisnegotiationaffectsthewaypeoplerespondtoAIDpreventionmessages.Datafromtheobservationofan‘unofficial’AID
3、SeducatordistributingmaterialsinBeijingparksin1996isanalyzedusinginteractionalsociolinguisticprinciplesdevelopedbyScollon(1997)inhisstudyofhandinginpublicplaces.Theanalysisrevealshowcomplexthenegotiationofidentityinsuchsituationsis,requiringparticipantstotakeupmultiplep
4、ositionsinmultiple,overlappingframesofactivity.ThewaystheAIDSeducatorandhistargetsmanagetheshiftsinframingandpositioningdemandedbythesituationplaysanimportantroleindetermininghowsuccessfullytheAIDSeducatorwasisindeliveringhismessageandmakinghistargetsbelieveitisrelevant
5、tothem.AIDSEducationandSocialPracticeTheeffectivenessofhealthpreventionmessagesdependsnotjustonthecontentofthemessages,butalsoonhowtheyaredeliveredandtheidentitiesthatthosewhodeliverthemclaimforthemselvesandimputeontotheirtargets.Thiscanbeeasilyseeninthethreepicturesbel
