3、counterstheeffectsofDVT.However,hospitalstaffwronglyadmittedhimtoanorthopedicward,wherehestayedfortwodays,beforefinallybeingtransferredtothecareofaconsultantvascularsurgeon.Twenty-fourhourslater,onNovember6,doctorsdecidedtheywouldhavetooperatetoremovehi
4、slegbelowtheknee.TheoperationwentaheadonNovemberl0,buttwodayslaterMrNewboldsufferedacardiacarrest.Ascanrevealedhehadhadapulmonaryembolism,aconditionrelatedtoDVT.Mr.NewboldsufferedbraindamageanddiedinthehospitalonNovember16.Givingevidence,thesurgeonsaidh
5、ecouldnotexplainwhyMrNewboldhadbeenadmittedtoanorthopedicwardwhereitwasnotpolicytoadministerFragmin.HedidnotknowwhyhismedicalteamhadnotgivenMr.Newboldthedruglater.YorkcoronerDonaldCoverdalesaid,‘FromNovember3untilthedayoftheoperation,noFragminwasgivento
6、MrNewbold.Ifhehadbeenadmittedtoaconsultantvascularsurgeon’scarefromdayone,itisclearthatFragminwouldhavebeenprescribed.FragminreducestheriskofDVT,butdoesnoteliminateit.ItisimpossibletosaywhetherMrNewboldwouldhavesufferedthisDVTifhehadreceivedtheFragmin.’
7、Herecordedaverdictofdeathbymisadventure.KimDaniells,MrNewbold’sfamily’slawyer,said,‘Thefamilyhopethatthehospitalwilllearnfromtheerrors,andthatnootherfamilieswillhavetosufferinthefuture.’AspokeswomanforYorkHospital’sNHSTrustsaid,‘Wewouldliketoextendoursi
