4、y,weareatapointwhereweneedtoadvanceourconceptual,technologicalandcommunicativeapproachestocollaborationacrossscales.Intermsofplanningandpreparingfortheunthinkable,regardlessofscale,firstwemustenvisionit.Visionrequiresinturnintegrationofknowledgefromdiversesources,innovelconfigurations.
5、Attimes,itseemsthatcollectivelywepossessmorethanenoughknowledgebutlackthecapacitytoputittogetherinaconceptuallyandultimatelypoliticallycompellingway.Intermsofbringaboutconceptualchange,collectiveeffortsclearlymatter,andhencetheimportanceofcollaborativemeetingssuchasthis.Earliercollabor
6、ativeachievementsinconceptualdevelopmentrelatedtoresilienceunderscorethispointandbringustothesignificanceofthepresentsymposium.Forexample,wehaverecognizedthelinkagesthatexist,particularlyintermsofscaleandsystemdynamics(Gundersonetal.,1995);andwehaveestablishedincontestablytheintegrated
7、characterofsocial-cultural-ecologicalsystemsandtheneedtoaddressthemassuch(e.g.BerkesandFolke,1998).Wehaveenvisionedsystemsofsystemsas“panarchies”ofsystemsandadaptivecycles,offeringalternativemetaphorsfororganisationandchange(GundersonandHolling,2002).Wehavepressedforwardinsociallearn
