2、becomesratherlikeaslabofjelly,sotemporaryrestraintsareessentialduringconstruction.However,whenthestackedbaleshavebeentieddowntothefoundations,therebycompressingthewallvertically,thewallistransformedfromamassofFig.1Arunningbondstructure.6Practicalstrawbalebuildingjellytoastiffan
3、dresilientedifice.Usuallystrawwallsarethenplasteredinsideandoutwiththreecoatsoflime-based,earthenorcement-basedplaster.Thefinishedproductisusuallyaboutahalf-metrethick,withexcellentthermalinsulationcharacteristics,verygoodresistancetofire,abletosupportverysubstantialroofloads,a
4、ndabletocopewithstrongimpact—asecure,comfortable,durable,ecologicallyfriendlyandpracticalbasisforbuildingsfordomestic,commercialandfarmpurposes.StrawversushayStrawisthematerialthatremainsafteraseedcrophasbeenharvested.Hayisthefinergrass,andnormallyisharvestedasafeedmaterial;for
5、example,lucerneisharvestedashay,wherethewholeoftheplantabovegroundisusedforstockfeed.Forbuilding,haybalesshouldbeavoided.Theyarelikelytocontainmoremoisture,becomposedofrelativelysoftmaterialandusuallywillbemoreexpensive.Wheat,oats,rye,barley,andricearesometypesofstrawthatmaybeu
6、sed,andtherearemanyotherplantsthatcanbeused.Aslongasthestrawisdryandcanbeformedintosuitablebales,itshouldbesuitable.Ricestrawtendstohavehighersilicacontent,whichmightbesomeadvantage,butitalsotendstoberelativelysoftcomparedwithoatstraw,forexample.Ofmoreimportancethanthetypeofstr
7、awisthatithasfairlylowmoisturecontent(usuallyabout12%to15%),andisbaledinfairlyuniformandfairlytightbales.Ifitisnotgreen,appearstobedry,lookstoberegularinshapeandiswellcompacted,itisprobablysuitable.StrawbalesizesStrawbalescomeinvarioussizesandshapes.Thebalesmostusedforbuildinga
