2、houettedbythesettingsunwithgoldandshininglines.Withold,crackedbrickspatchedwithlichen,thewallsareweather-beatenguards,standingstillforcenturiesinprotectingthecity.Ourancestorslikedtobuildwalls.TheybuiltwallsinBeijing,Xi’an,Nanjingandmanyothercities,andtheybuilttheGreatWall,whichsnakesthrou
3、ghhalfofourcountry.Theybuiltwallstowardofftheenemiesandevilspirits.Thistraditionhasbeenmaintainedtothisdayaswestillhavemanyschoolsandparkswalledofffromthepublic.Igrewipattherootofthecitywalls,andIhavelovingthemsincemychildhood.Foralongtime,wallswereoneofthemostnaturalthingsintheworld.Myper
4、ception,however,changedafterahikingtriptotheEasternSuburbs,ascenicareaofmycity.MyclassmatesandIwerewalkingwithsomeinternationalstudents.Aswewalkedoutofthecity,wefoundourselvesflankedbytallerandtallertrees,whichformedahugecanopyaboveourheads.Suddenlyaninternationalstudentaskedme,“Whereisthe
5、entrancetotheEasternSuburbs?”“We’realreadyintheEasternSuburbs,”soIreplied.Heseemedtakenaback,“IthoughtyouChinesehavewallsforeverything.”Hisremarksetoffaheateddebate.Atonepoint,helikenedourwalledcitiesto“jails”,whileIinsistedthattheEasternSuburbswasoneofthemanyplacesinChinathathadnowalls.Th
