4、weunderstandoftheircontroversythefirmerourgraspwillbeofvariouscentralissuesinthetheoryofknowledgeandinphilosophymoregenerally.Thisaudienceneedsasmuchexactinformationaboutthemanuscriptsascanbeprovidedtoserveasabasisforitsownresearch.Asecondandequallyimportantaudienceismadeupofstudents
5、(bothundergraduateandgraduate),interestedlaymen,andagoodmanyprofessionalphilosophersforwhomtheissuesandeventsoftheCarnap-Quinecontroversyarenotmattersofregularstudy.Whatisessentialforthisaudienceisaclear,readabletext,unburdenedbymassivescholarlyparaphernalia,andanintroductionthatlays
6、outtheessentialphilosophicandbiographicalfactsalongwithaguidetotheirinterpretation.Fortunately,itispossibletomeettheneedsofbothaudiencesinasinglevolume.ForthefirstgroupIhavetriedtoreproduceasmuchofthecharacteroftheoriginalmanuscriptsaspossible:spellings,marginalia,corrections,andsoon
