3、entheycannotrememberhowtodosomething.Itisagreatsupplementalbookforstatisticscoursespreciselybecausesuchcoursesrarelyspendmuchtimeonthetopicsthisbookcovers—topicsthatstudentsneedtoknowtobeeffectiveStatausers.Workflowisareflectionofwhataseniorscholarhaslearnedaboutwhathappensaswemovefromrawdatatoapubl
4、ishedreport.Workflowpresentsmanyguidelinesandfewreaderswillagreewithallofthem.Manyoftheguidelinesmayseemobvioustoexperiencedusers,butthisisonlybecausetheywerelearnedthehardway.Forexample,onpage143Longwrites,“Neverchangeavariableunlessyougiveitanewname.”Thoseofuswhohave,onoccasion,ignoredthisadvice
5、learneditsimportancewhenapivotalvariablewasirreparablydestroyed.IfearthatsomebeginningStatauserswhoreadsuchguidelinesarelikelytoignorethem.Longminimizesthisriskbyshowingthelikelyconsequencesofignoringmanyofhisguidelines.Seeingthedamagethatcanbedonebyignoringhisadviceencouragescloserattentiontoall
