4、rtantforcedrivingplantevolutionandaffectingcommunitystructureandfunctioning.Hybridizationmaybeoverlooked,however,amongmorphologicallyhighlyuniformcongeners.AnexcellentexampleofsuchagroupisEleocharissubgenusLimnochloa,whichhasnoreliablyprovenhybrids.Doesthi

5、sreflectbiologicalbarrierstointerspecificcrossesordifficultiesindetectingthehybrids?WetestedthehypothesisthathybridizationoccursamongsympatricEleochariscellulosa,E.interstincta,andE.mutatainnorthernBelize,CentralAmerica.Methods:Morphometricstudy(407plants)was

6、followedbyexaminationofinter-simplesequencerepeat(ISSR)polymor-phisms(44plants)andITSsequencevariation(33plants).Keyresults:TwoputativelyhybridmorphotypeswerediscernedE.cellulosa-resemblingandE.interstincta-resembling.DNAmarkersofE.cellulosaandE.interstinc

7、tadisplayedadditiveconstitutioninplantsfromoneE.cellulosa-resemblingpopulationonly.TheotherputativelyhybridpopulationscontainedISSRandITSmarkersofthespeciestheyresembledmor-phologically,severaluniqueISSRmarkers,andITSsequencesofanundescribedSouthAmericanLi

8、mnochloaentity.DNAmarkersofE.mutatawereabsentintheputativehybrids.Conclusions:Simultaneoususeofvarioustypesofmolecularmarkerscanovercomemanypitfallsofinvestigationsconcerninghybridizationamongcloselyrelatedan
