3、alincomplyingwiththeirdosimetricgoalsandthereexistsstrongintrastructuralcompetition.Inverseplanningobjectivefunctionshouldnotonlybalancethecompetingobjectivesofdifferentstructuresbutalsothatoftheindividualvoxelsinvariousstructures.Inthisworkweproposetomo

4、deltheintrastructuraltradeoffthroughthemodulationofvoxel-dependentimportancefactorsanddealwiththechallengingproblemofhowtoobtainasensiblesetofimportancefactorswithamanageableamountofcomputing.Insteadoflettingthevaluesofvoxel-dependentimportancetovaryfree

5、lyduringthesearchprocess,anadaptivealgorithm,inwhichtheimportancefactorsweretiedtothelocalradiationdosesthroughaheuristicallyconstructedrelation,wasdeveloped.ItisshownthattheapproachisquitegeneralandtheEUD-basedoptimizationisaspecialcaseoftheproposedfram

6、ework.Thenewplanningtoolwasappliedtostudyahypotheticalphantomcaseandaprostatecase.Comparisonoftheresultswiththatobtainedusingconventionalinverseplanningtechniquewithstructurespeci®cimportancefactorsindicatedthatthedosedistributionsfromtheconventionalinve
