4、diationpassthroughapatient,killingbothcancerousandnormalcells.Thus,theradiationtherapymustbecarefullyplannedsothataclinicallyprescribeddoseisdeliveredtotargetscontainingcancerouscells,whilenearbyorgansandtissuesarespared.Currently,atechniquecalledintensity-modulatedrad
5、iationtherapyIMRTisconsideredtobethemosteffectiveradiationtherapyformanyformsofcancer.InIMRT,thepatientisirradiatedfromseveralbeams,eachofwhichisdecomposedintohundredsofsmallbeamlets,theintensitiesofwhichcanbecontrolledindividually.Inthispaper,weconsidertheproblemofd
6、esigningatreatmentplanforIMRTwhentheorientationsofthebeamsaregiven.Weproposeanewmodelthathasthepotentialtoachievemostofthegoalswithrespecttothequalityofatreatmentplanthathavebeenconsideredtodate.However,incontrastwithestablishedmixed-integerandnonlinearprogrammingformu
7、lations,wedosowhileretaininglinearityoftheoptimizationproblem,whichsubstantiallyimprovesthetractabilityoftheoptimizationproblem.Furthermore,wediscusshowseveraladditionalqualityandpracticalaspectsoftheproblemthathavebeenignoredtodatecanbeincorporatedintoourlinearmodel.W
