2、rethatdoesnotcorrespondtothefive-componenttheoreticalstructurehepresents.Setsofface-validitemsthatbetterapproximatethetheoreticalstructurearedescribed.Correlationsbetweenthesesetsofitemsandmeasuresofotherconstructsrevealthatfourofthefivecomponentsarepositivelyrelatedtosocialanxiety.Effec
3、tivesocialinteractionissupposedlythehighself-monitor'sforte,andsocialanxietyappearstobeincompatiblewiththis.Thecorrelationalresultsthereforequestiontheentiretheoryandindicatetheneedforanarrowerdefinitionoftheconstruct.AdoptingsuchadefinitionfromSnyder'sreviewarticle(1979),wepresenta13-it
4、emRevisedSelf-Monitoringscalewhichmeasuresonlysensitivitytotheex-pressivebehaviorofothersandabilitytomodifyself-presentation.A20-itemConcernforAppropriatenessscaleisalsodescribed.Thisscalemeasures2variablesthataredirectlyassociatedwithsocialanxiety—cross-situationalvariabilityandattentio
5、ntosocialcomparisoninformation.Bothscaleshaveacceptableinternalconsistency,andbothyield2subscalescoresaswellasatotalscore.Prospectiveusersofeitherscaleareadvisedtotreatthe3scoresseparately.Thetheoryofself-monitoring(Snyder,1974,man,&Cochran,1979;Cheek,1982;Schnei-1979)presumesconsistentp
