2、togetherwithlog-linearmodelsforcontingencytables,havebecomewidelyusedbysocialscientistsinthepast30years.Inthischapter,weshowthattheidentiÞcationandestimationofcausaleffectsusingthesemodelspresentseverechallenges,overandabovethoseusuallyencounteredinidentifyingcausalef
3、fectsinalinearsetting.ThesechallengesarederivedfromthelackofseparateidentiÞcationofthemeanandvarianceinthesemodels.Weshowtheirimpactinexperimentalandobservationalstudies,andweinvestigatetheproblemsthatariseintheuseofstandardapproachestothecausalanalysisofnonexperiment
4、aldata,suchaspropensityscores,instrumentalvariables,andcontrolfunctions.Naiveuseoftheseapproacheswithnonlinearprobabilitymodelswillyieldbiasedestimatesofcausaleffects,thoughtheestimateswillbealowerboundofthetruecausaleffectandwillhavethecorrectsign.Weshowthatthetechni
5、queofY-standardizationbringstheparametersofnonlinearprobabilitymodelsonascalethatwecanmeaningfullyinterpretbutcannotmeasure.Othertechniques,suchasaveragepartialeffects,canyieldcausaleffectsontheprobabilityscale,but,inthiscase,thelinearprobabilitymodelprovidesasimplean
