4、sreligiousandmystical.ItcomesveryclosetothemoremysticalaspectoftheBookofMencius,andseveralpassagesarealmostidenticalinthetwoworks.2EvenbeforethisClassicattractedtheNeo-Confucianists,itssubtledoctrineshadstrongappealtobothTaoistsandBuddhists.Fromthefourthtotheeleventhcentury,TaoistandBuddhist

5、scholarswrotecom-mentariesonit,andoneBuddhistmonkintheeleventhcenturycalledhimselfbythenameofthebook.ItformedabridgebetweenTaoismandBuddhismandtheConfucianschoolandinthiswaypreparedfortheinfluenceofBuddhismandTaoismonConfucianism,thususher-ingintheNeo-Confucianmovement.WhatattractedtheTaoist
