2、debyagroupofChina’sseniorbusinessleadersasaplatformtopromotebusinessandentrepreneurship,CEFwasagroundbreakinginitiativeatthetimeitwassetup.Chinahaddevelopedrapidlyintheperiodaftereconomicreformswerefirstintroducedinthelate1970s,butwasstillstrugglingtoestablishamarketeconomy.Nonetheless,by200
3、2ChinaalreadyboastedanincreasingnumberofwealthyandsuccessfulentrepreneursandmanyofthesewerepartoftheelitegroupthatmadeupCEF.MembershipcametoincludetheheadsofChina’slargestandmostwell-knownprivatecompanies,suchasChenDongsheng,Chairman&CEOofTaikangLifeInsurance,GuoGuangchang,ChairmanofShanghai
4、FosunGroup,CharlesZhang,Chairman&CEOofsearchengineSohu,WangShi,ChairmanofVankeCompany,andJackMa,founderofsourcingsiteAlibaba.EntrepreneurshipwasstillaverynewconceptinChinaatthetimeofCEF’sfounding.State-ownedandforeign-investedfirmsdominatedmuchoftheeconomy,andtheroleofentrepreneursinbothChin
5、a’seconomyanditssocietyhadnotyetbeensettled.Whilethenumberofprivately-ownedbusinesseshadgrownrapidly,mostwererelativelysmall.CEF’smembershadfirst-handexperienceoftherangeofobstaclesfacingprivatelycontrolledfirms,includinganevolvinglegalandregulatoryframeworkandalackofaccesstobankandothercapi
6、tal.TheoriginalmembersofCEFformedthegroupinlargepartasameanstosharetheinsightsandtacticsthathelpedthemsurviveintheseconditions.Later,thegroup’smandateexpandedtoincludeimprovingtheenvironmentforprivatebusinessinChinaandconductingoutreachtohelpspreadthewordabouttheimportantroleentrepreneurspla
