3、ineshealthcareexpendituresintheUnitedStatesfrom2006through2009inordertocastlightonimportanttrendsinthelevelandrateofchangeinspending,aswellascoverageshiftsduringthisperiod.Theultimateintentofthereportistoarmpublic,private,andsocialsectorleaderswithfact-basedinsightstoguideinformeddec

4、isionmaking.ThisisthethirdinaseriesofreportsfocusedonhealthcarespendingintheUnitedStates.ThepreviousreportscomparedhealthcareexpendituresintheU.S.tothoseinothereconomicallydevelopedcountries.TheydemonstratedthattheUnitedStatesspendshundredsofbillionsmorethanwouldbeexpected–evenaccoun

5、tingfordifferencesinwealthandthepropensityofrichercountriestospendmoreoftheirincomeonhealthcare.TheanalysisinthesereportswasbasedonaMcKinsey-developedmeasure,“EstimatedSpendingAccordingtoWealth”(ESAW).ThisisderivedfromaregressionanalysisofincomeandspendingdatafromothercountriesintheO

6、rganizationforEconomicCooperationandDevelopment(OECD),andallowsustoestimatehowmuchagivencountrywouldbeexpectedtospendonhealthcarebasedonpercapitagrossdomesticproduct.Theanalysisinthisreportdrawsuponanumberofdatasources.TheseincludehealthcarespendingdatafromtheOECDaswellastheNationalH

7、ealthExpenditureAccountsandotherdatasetsproducedbytheCentersforMedicareandMedicaidServices.Inaddition,thereportmakesuseofanalysisprovidedbyTheLewinGroup,adivisionofOptumInsight(formerlyIngenix).OptumInsightisawhollyownedsubsidiaryofUnitedHealthGroup.ThisresearcheffortwasledbyDavidKno
