3、uideabouteducationintheStateofCalifornia.Forsimilarinformationonothertopics,visitthefullCalEdFacts.Since1996,CaliforniaEducationCode(EC)Section60800hasrequiredthateachlocaleducationalagency(LEA)administerastate-designatedphysicalfitnesstest(PFT)toallstudentsingradesfive,sev
4、en,andnine.DuringthemonthofFebruary,March,April,orMay,thegoverningboardofeachLEAmaintaininggradesfive,seven,ornineshalladministertoeachstudentinthosegradesthePFT.ThetestdesignatedforthispurposebytheStateBoardofEducationistheFitnessgram®.TheFitnessgram®,developedbyTheCooperI
5、nstitute,providescriterion-referencedstandardstoevaluatefitness.Thesestandardsrepresentminimumlevelsoffitnessknowntobeassociatedwiththosehealthandphysicalcharacteristicsthatofferprotectionagainstdiseasesresultingfromphysicalinactivity.Achievementofthefitnessstandardsisbased
6、uponascorefallingintheHealthyFitnessZone(HFZ)foreachofsixfitnessareas.TheHFZrepresentsminimallevelsofsatisfactoryachievementonthetasks.ThegoalisforstudentstoachievetheHFZforallsixfitnessareasofthephysicalfitnesstest.SenateBill896,Ch1066,Stats.1998, requirestheCaliforniaDepa
7、rtmentofEducation(CDE)tocompilethePFTresultsbyDecember31,andtoreportresultstotheGovernorandLegislature.Statewidedatacollectioniscompletedelectronically.PFTresultsarereportedbyschools,LEAs,counties,andthestate.TheresultsarepostedontheCDEPFTWebpage[http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg
