5、alm,andindeedinallthesongswhichshowforththepraisesofourGodandthepantingsofourheartsafterhim.AlthoughDavidisnotmentionedastheauthor,thisPsalmmustbetheoffspringofhispen;itissoDavidic,itsmellsofthesonofJesse,itbearsthemarksofhisstyleandexperienceineveryletter.Wecouldsoonerd
6、oubttheauthorshipofthesecondpartofPilgrim'sProgressthanquestionDavid'stitletobethecomposerofthisPsalm.Subject.ItisthecryofamanfarremovedfromtheoutwardordinancesandworshipofGod,sighingforthelonglovedhouseofhisGod;andatthesametimeitisthevoiceofaspiritualbeliever,underdepre
7、ssions,longingfortherenewalofthedivinepresence,strugglingwithdoubtsandfears,butyetholdinghisgroundbyfaithinthelivingGod.MostoftheLord'sfamilyhavesailedontheseawhichisheresographicallydescribed.ItisprobablethatDavid'sflightfromAbsalommayhavebeentheoccasionforcomposingthis
