1、TREASURYOFDAVIDPSALM86C.H.SpurgeonPsalms86:1(PSALMS)PSALM86TITLE.—APrayerofDavid.WehavehereoneofthefivepsalmsentitledTephillahsorprayers.Thispsalmconsistsofpraiseaswellasprayer,butitisinallpartssodirectlyaddressedtoGodthatitismostfitlycalled"aprayer."Aprayerisnonethelessbutallth
2、emoreaprayerbecauseveinsofpraiserunthroughit.ThispsalmwouldseemtohavebeenspeciallyknownasDavid'sprayer;evenastheninetiethis"theprayerofMoses."Davidcomposedit,andnodoubtoftenexpressedhimselfinsimilarlanguage;boththematterandthewordingaresuitabletohisvariedcircumstancesandexpressi
3、veofthedifferentcharacteristicsofhismind.InmanyrespectsitresemblesPs17:1-15,whichbearsthesametitle,butinotheraspectsitisverydifferent;theprayersofagoodmanhaveafamilylikeness,buttheyvaryasmuchastheyagree.Wemaylearnfromthepresentpsalmthatthegreatsaintsofoldwereaccustomedtoprayvery
4、muchinthesamefashionaswedo;believersinallagesareofonegenus.ThenameofGodoccursveryfrequentlyinthispsalm,sometimesitisJehovah,butmorecommomlyAdonai,whichitisbelievedbymanylearnedscholarswaswrittenbytheJewishtranscribersinsteadofthesublimertitle,becausetheirsuperstitiousdreadledthe
5、mtodoso:we,labouringundernosuchtormentingfear,rejoiceinJehovah,ourGod.ItissingularthatthosewhoweresoafraidoftheirGod,thattheydarednotwritehisname,hadyetsolittlegodlyfear,thattheydaredtoalterhisword.DIVISION.—Thepsalmisirregularinitsconstructionbutmaybedividedintothreeportions,ea
