2、swhitewashedfence,inthebustlingportcityofHannibal,Missouri.SituatedonthebanksoftheMississippiriveritwouldlaterprovideamodelforthefictitioustownofSt.PetersburginHuckleberryFinnandTomSawyer.WhenTwain’sfatherdiedin1847thefamilywasleftinfinancialstraits,soelev
3、enyearoldSamuelleftschool(hewasingrade5)andobtainedhisfirstofmanyjobsworkingwithvariousnewspapersandmagazinesincludingtheHannibalCourierasjourneymanprinter.“SoIbecameanewspaperman.Ihatedtodoit,butIcouldn'tfindhonestemployment.”Healsostartedwriting,amonghis
4、firststories“AGallantFireman”(1851)and“TheDandyFrighteningtheSquatter”(1852).AftertravelingtoandworkinginNewYorkandPhiladelphiaforafewyearshemovedbacktoSt.Louisin1857.Itwasherethatthelureoftheelegantsteamboatsandfestivecrowdsdrewhisattentionandhebecameanap
5、prentice‘cub’riverpilotunderHoraceBixby,earninghislicensein1858.AsasuccessfulpilotplyinghistradebetweenSt.LouisandNewOrleans,TwainalsogrewtolovethesecondlongestriverintheworldwhichhedescribesaffectionatelyinhismemoirLifeontheMississippi(1883).“Thefaceofthe
6、water,intime,becameawonderfulbook—abookthatwasadeadlanguagetotheuneducatedpassenger,butwhichtolditsmindtomewithoutreserve,deliveringitsmostcherishedsecretsasclearlyasifitutteredthemwithavoice.Anditwasnotabooktobereadonceandthrownaside,forithadanewstorytote
