4、oriographyinthewakeofHaydenWhite’sMetahistorypresentarelativistviewofthepossibilityofeitherobjectivityormaterialreferentialityinhistoricaldiscourse,particularlythroughthemediumofnarrative.Fromthisperspective,historicalnarrativeisdefinedasadiscursivecreationthatobscuresthematerialrelation
5、sofitsproductionandasaninstrumentofideologyandoppression.“Fact,Fiction,andFabrication”investigateswhatpoliticalandethicalrepercussionsthisattitudetowardsandtheorizationofhistoryhasandhowmuchcontemporaryfictiontypicallylabeled“postmodern”bothinitiallyreflectsandultimatelydeniesthismodel.T
6、hisstudyarguesthattheassessmentofcontemporarypostmodernfictionasreflectingpoststructuralmodelsofendlesstextualitydeniesanimportantelementofthenovelsstudied:theircommitmenttothepossibilityofaccessingmaterialrealityandtheimportanceofsuchaccessbothfortheconstructionofanethicsandforpolitical
