4、urseofonegreatcontributorystreamtotheworld-riverofpoetrythatweareinvitedtofollow.WearehereinvitedtotracethestreamofEnglishpoetry.Butwhetherwesetourselves,ashere,tofollowonlyoneoftheseveralstreamsthatmakethemightyriverofpoetry,orwhetherweseektoknowthem
5、all,ourgoverningthoughtshouldbethesame.Weshouldconceiveofpoetryworthily,andmorehighlythanithasbeenthecustomtoconceiveofit.Weshouldconceiveofitascapableofhigheruses,andcalledtohigherdestinies,thanthosewhichingeneralmenhaveassignedtoithitherto.Moreandmo
6、remankindwilldiscoverthatwehavetoturntopoetrytointerpretlifeforus,toconsoleus,tosustainus.Withoutpoetry,oursciencewillappearincomplete;andmostofwhatnowpasseswithusforreligionandphilosophywillbereplacedbypoetry.Science,Isay,willappearincompletewithouti
