1、Goodevening:Thisisthe37thtimeIhavespokentoyoufromthisoffice,wheresomanydecisionshavebeenmadethatshapethehistoryofthisnation.EachtimeIhavedonesotodiscusswithyousomematterthatIbelieveaffectedthenationalinterest.InallthedecisionsIhavemadeinmypubliclifeIhavealw

2、aystriedtodowhatwasbestforthenation.ThroughoutthelonganddifficultperiodofWatergate,Ihavefeltitwasmydutytoperseveretomakeeverypossibleefforttocompletethetermofofficetowhichyouelectedme.Inthepastfewdays,however,ithasbecomeevidenttomethatInolongerhaveastrongen

3、oughpoliticalbaseintheCongresstojustifycontinuingthateffort.Aslongastherewassuchabase,Ifeltstronglythatitwasnecessarytoseetheconstitutionalprocessthroughtoitsconclusionthattodootherwisewouldbeunfaithfultothespiritofthatdeliberatelydifficultprocess,andadange

4、rouslydestabilizingprecedentforthefuture.Butwiththedisappearanceofthatbase,Inowbelievethattheconstitutionalpurposehasbeenserved.Andthereisnolongeraneedfortheprocesstobeprolonged.Iwouldhavepreferredtocarrythroughtothefinishwhateverthepersonalagonyitwouldhave

5、involved,andmyfamilyunanimouslyurgedmetodoso.Buttheinterestsofthenationmustalwayscomebeforeanypersonalconsiderations.FromthediscussionsIhavehadwithCongressionalandotherleadersIhaveconcludedthatbecauseoftheWatergatematterImightnothavethesupportoftheCongresst

6、hatIwouldconsidernecessarytobacktheverydifficultdecisionsandcarryoutthedutiesofthisofficeinthewaytheinterestsofthenationwillrequire.Ihaveneverbeenaquitter.Toleaveofficebeforemytermiscompletedisabhorrenttoeveryinstinctinmybody.ButasPresident,Imustputtheinter

7、estsofAmericafirst.AmericaneedsafulltimePresidentandafulltimeCongress,particularlyatthistimewithproblemswefaceathomeandabroad.TocontinuetofightthroughthemonthsaheadformypersonalvindicationwouldalmosttotallyabsorbthetimeandattentionofboththePresidentandtheCo
