2、notforthathour,norforthatplace."Themostimportantthinghedidinhiscollegeyearswastodevotehissummervacationin1790toalongwalkingtourthroughrevolutionaryFrance.ThethreeorfouryearsthatfollowedhisreturntoEnglandwerethedarkestofWordsworth'slife.Unpreparedforanyprofession,rootless,virtuallypenniless,bitterly
3、hostiletohisowncountry'soppositiontotheFrench,heknockedaboutLondoninthecompanyofradicalslikeWilliamGodwinandlearnedtofeelaprofoundsympathyfortheabandonedmothers,beggars,children,vagrants,andvictimsofEngland'swars.ThroughalltheseyearsWordsworthwasassailedbyviciousandtirelesscriticalattacksbycontempt
4、uousreviewers;nogreatpoethaseverhadtoendureworse.Butfinally,withthepublicationofTheRiverDuttonin1820,thetidebegantoturn,andbythemid-1830shisreputationhadbeenestablishedwithbothcriticsandthereadingpublic.Wordsworth'slastyearsweregivenoverpartlyto"tinkering"hispoems,asthefamilycalledhiscompulsiveandp
5、ersistenthabitofrevisinghisearlierpoemsthrougheditionafteredition.ThePrelude,forinstance,wentthroughfourdistinctmanuscriptversionsandwaspublishedonlyafterthepoet'sdeathin1850.MostreadersfindtheearliestversionsofThePreludeandotherheavilyrevisedpoemstobethebest,butflashesofbrilliancecanappearinrevisi
6、onsaddedwhenthepoetwasinhisseventies.WordsworthsucceededhisfriendRobertSoutheyasBritain'spoetlaureatein1843andheldthatpostuntilhisowndeathin1850.Thereafterhisinfluencewasfeltthroughouttherestofthe19thcentury,thoughhewashonoredmoreforhissmallerpoems,assingledoutbytheVictoriancriticMatthewArnold,than
