4、hesmell.Atthatage,I’dtakeanyexcusetomakeestimatesanddominorarithmetic.I’dcalculateourgasmileage—figureoutuselessstatisticsonthingslikegroceryspending.I’dbeenhearinganadcampaignaboutsmoking.Ican’trememberthedetails,butbasicallytheadsaid,everypuffofacigaretteta
5、kessomenumberofminutesoffofyourlife:Ithinkitmighthavebeentwominutesperpuff.Atanyrate,Idecidedtodothemathformygrandmother.Iestimatedthenumberofcigarettesperdays,estimatedthenumberofpuffspercigaretteandsoon.WhenIwassatisfiedthatI’dcomeupwithareasonablenumber,Ip
6、okedmyheadintothefrontofthecar,tappedmygrandmotherontheshoulder,andproudlyproclaimed,“Attwominutesperpuff,you’vetakennineyearsoffyourlife!”Ihaveavividmemoryofwhathappened,anditwasnotwhatIexpected.Iexpectedtobeapplaudedformyclevernessandarithmeticskills.“Jeff,
