2、ivity.In"theImaginaryorder,"theirownimagepermanentlycatchesandcaptivatesthesubject.Lacanexplainsthat"themirrorstageisaphenomenontowhichIassignatwofoldvalue.Inthefirstplace,ithashistoricalvalueasitmarksadecisiveturning-pointinthementaldevelopmentofthechild.Inthesecondplace,ittypifiesanessentialli

4、ualnatureofthedualrelationship."ThemirrorstagedescribestheformationoftheEgoviatheprocessofobjectification,theEgobeingtheresultofaconflictbetweenone'sperceivedvisualappearanceandone'semotionalexperience.ThisidentificationiswhatLacancalledalienation.Atsixmonths,thebabystilllacksphysicalco-ordinati

5、on.Thechildisabletorecognizethemselvesinamirrorpriortotheattainmentofcontrolovertheirbodilymovements.Thechildseestheirimageasawholeandthesynthesisofthisimageproducesasenseofcontrastwiththelackofco-ordinationofthebody,whichisperceivedasafragmentedbody.Thechildexperiencesthiscontrastinitiallyasari

6、valrywiththeirimage,becausethewholenessoftheimagethreatensthechildwithfragmentation—thusthemirrorstagegivesrisetoanaggressivetensionbetweenthesubjectandtheimage.Toresolvethisaggressivetension,thechildidentifieswiththeimage:thisprimaryidentificationwiththecounterpartformstheEgo.[36]Lacanunderstan

7、dsthismomentofidentificationasamomentofjubilation,sinceitleadstoanimaginarysenseofmastery;yetwhenthechildcomparestheirownprecarioussenseofmasterywiththeomnipotenceofthemother,adepressivereactionmayaccompanythejubilation.[37]
