5、mately,thecellsdiedespiteinactivationofcaspasesbywayofaslower,nonapoptoticcelldeath(6-9).Incontrast,antiapoptoticproteinssuchasBcl-2,Bcl-xL,andoncogenicAblcanmaintainsurvivalandclonogenicityinthefaceofthesetreatments.Conversely,someproapoptoticproteinssu
6、chasBax,amammaliancelldeathproteinthattargetsmitochondrialmembranes,caninducemitochondrialdamageandcelldeathevenwhencaspasesareinactivated(10).Suchexperimentalobservationsarguethatacaspase-independentmechanismforcommitmenttodeathexists.Thismechanismislik
