4、riedbeforemarryagainandcombinethechildrenfrompreviousmarriagesintothenewfamilies),childlessfamilies,andsoon.Whatcausedthestructureofthefamilytochange?Inthe1930sand1940s,manyfamiliesfacedseriousfinancial,ormoneyproblemsduringtheGreatDepressionandwomenwerechoosingtogotocollege
5、andtakejobsoutsidethehome.Asaresult,thebirthratebegantofallandthedivorceratebegantorise.DuringWorldWarII(1939-1945),5millionwomenwereleftalonetotakecareoftheirhomesandtheirchildren.Becausemanymenwereatwar,thousandsofthese"warwidows"hadtogotoworkoutsidetheirhome.Duringthenext
6、tenyears,thesituationchanged.Therewerefewerdivorces,andpeoplemarriedatayoungerageandhadmorechildrenthanthepreviousgeneration.Itwasunusualforamothertoworkoutsidethehomeduringtheyearswhenherchildrenweregrowingup.Familiesbeganleavingcitiesandmovingintosingle-familyhomesinthesub
7、urbs.Thetraditionalfamilyseemedtobereturning.Intheyearsbetween1960sand1990s,thereweremanyimportantchangesinthestructureofthefamily.Fromthe1960stotheearly1970s,thedivorceratedoubledandthebirthratefellbyhalf.Thenumberofsingle-parentfamiliestripled,andthenumberofcoupleslivingto
