4、ccepted26November2004AbstractWetestedtheeffectofLactobacilluscaseistrainShirota(LcS)onthemurinemodelofulcerativecolitisinducedbydextransodiumsulphate.TheeffectofLcSwastestedeitherasaprophylactic10daysbeforetheonsetofthedisease,simultaneouslywithulcerati
5、vecolitisinductionorcontinued10daysafterthediseasewasinduced.LcSwasnotabletopreventthediseaseinductioninanyoftheexperiments.However,importantclinicalparametersincludingbloodanemiaindicators,bodyweight,andorganweightwereimprovedintheanimalsreceivingLcSas
6、comparedwiththeulcerativecolitis-inducedcontrols.IncreasedcolonicepithelialregenerationintheLcStreatedanimalswasobservedinthechronicstage.TheresultsseemedbetterforthesimultaneousshortLcStreatmentwheresomeparametersremainedsimilartothePBScontrols,includi
7、ngdiseaseactivityscoresmeasuredintheacutestage.WecanconcludethatalthoughLcSalonecannotpreventtheinductionofulcerativecolitisbydextransodiumsulphate,itcanimprovetheclinicalconditionofthemice.Thiscouldimplyimportantbiologicalconsequencesforthehumansituati
