3、firstname.Healsodevelopedfreshteachingtechniquesandlearninggamestohelphisstudentswithspellingandmaths.Inhisearlytwenties,however,hegaveupteachingtopursue(追求)afull-timecareerasajournalistandpoet.WhenWaltWhitmanfirstappearedasapoet,hisarrivalontotheAmericanliteraryscenewasmetwithcontrove
4、rsy.Hisfirstcollectionofpoems,LeavesofGrass,wassounusualthatnocommercialpublisherwouldprintthework.In1855Whitmanpublished,athisownexpense,thefirsteditionofhiscollectionoftwelvepoems.Whitman'spoeticstylewasuncommoninthesensethathewrotepoemsinaformcalledparallelism(对比法),inwhichhisgoalwas
5、tocopytheflowoftheseaandthequickly-passingnatureofhumanemotion.AcommonthemeinWhitman'spoetryisself-realization.Inhiswork,Whitmanmovesfromconventionalpatternsofrhymetocreateauniquerhythmandamulti-layered,buttrulyAmericanvoice.“AlthoughWhitmanwasconsideredarevolutionarybymany,thereislitt
