4、mSpanBridgeEngineering’98Page2INTRODUCTIONThispaperdescribesthenewseismicdesignprovisionsgiveninSection4oftheCanadianHighwayBridgeDesignCode(CHBDC)[1],dueforpublicationby1999.Inparticulartheprovisionswhichdifferfromthoseinthe1994AmericanAssociationofStateHighwayandTransporta

5、tionOfficialsLoadandResistanceFactorCode(AASHTOLRFD)[2]arediscussed.Theseismiczoningmapsforthe1994AASHTOLRFDCodeweredevelopedbasedon"firm-ground"horizontalaccelerationshavingaprobabilityofexceedanceof10%in50years.Thisisthesamebasisfortheseismiczoningmapsthatappearinthe1995Na

6、tionalBuildingCodeofCanada[3].HowevertheNBCCusestwoparametersforeachlocation,thatistheaccelerationandthevelocity,eachhavingaprobabilityofexceedanceof10%in50years.WhiletheSeismicSubcommitteeoftheCHBDCpreferredthetwo-parameterapproach,usingbothaccelerationandvelocity,itwasfelt

7、thattherewerenewdesignapproachesonthehorizonforNorthAmericancodes.InparticulartheUniformHazardSpectrum(UHS)approachwasbeingconsideredbytheCanadianNationalCommitteeonEarthquakeEngineeringforpossibleinclusioninthenexteditionoftheNBCC.TheUHSapproachofferstheadvantageofproviding

8、spectralvaluescorrespondingtotwodistinctperiodsforeachlocationinthecountry.
