3、asinglycommoninmoderndeepwaterfieldoperations.Oilexploration,development,andnowproduction,aremorefrequentlyconductedindeeper-waterenvironmentswherethechallengesfacedbydrillingandoperationscanseverelyimpacttheevaluationofoilandrockgeochemistryandfluidproperties.Po
4、orlyconsolidatedsediments,swellingclayminerals,andresponsestoevolvingenvironmentalregulationsregardingoffshoredisposalofdrillcuttingshaveresultedinthewidespreaduseofenhancedmineraloilorsynthetic-basedmuds.Also,water-baseddrillingfluidsusedinsomedeepwateroperation
5、scontainadditivesthatmayimpactfluidandrockgeochemistry.Forexample,asphalt-basedshalestabilizersareaddedtoaidwell-borecompetencyandpreventstickingdrillpipe,andpolyalkylatedglycolsareaddedtodepressfreezingtemperaturesandpreventtheformationofgashydratesinthedrilling
6、mud.Becausetheseandotheradditivesareoftenasignificantcomponentofwater-basedmuds,theymayaffectthegeochemicalsignatureoffluidsandrocksandalterfluidproperties.Highlysalinebrinesareanotherimportantsourceofcontaminationastheyareusedincompletionfluids,water-wetmuds,and
7、areemulsifiedinoil-wetmuds.Brinecomponentsimpactmetalcontentsofpetroleum-fluidtestsandcomplicatethedeterminationofformation-watercompositions.Despitepotentialproblemsintroducedbytheseadditives,successfulstrategiescanbedevisedtoaccuratelyaccesskeygeochemicalandeng
