3、aveguidesthencanbeobtainedandnumericallysolvedtocalculatetheeffectiveindicesoftheguidedmodes.Uponnormalizingthetime-averagedpowerperunitlengthinthelateraldirection,thefieldprofileofeachguidedmodecanbeobtainedbysuccessivelyapplicationsofthecharacteristicmatrixtothefieldattherefer

4、enceinterfaceplane.Thismethodcanbecarriedoutefficientlywithrelativelymodestcomputationtime.Theapplicationofthismethodtosamplesofstepandgradedindexwaveguidesaswellascoupledplanarwaveguidesaredemonstrated・IntroductionStudyonmodefieldprofileofawaveguideisimportantforthecouplingofli

5、ghtwavefromitssourcetowaveguideandfromwaveguidetowaveguide・Somewaveguidesaredesignedtohavecertainmodeprofiletoprovidepiirticularspotshapeandsizeforspecialpurposessuchasbetterqualifyoflaserprintingandbettercouplingefficiencybetweendifferenttypeofwaveguide.Moreover,measuringthemod

6、eprofileisoneofthepopularmethodsforcharacterizingwaveguideinpractice・Whileanalysisofmodeprofileof3-layerslabwaveguidescanbecarriedoutinastraightforwardmannerspecialmethodshavebeendevelopedformorecomplexstructures・Wellknownamongthesearethecharacteristicmatrixmethod,finiteelementm
