5、virusismousehepatitisvirus(MHV),inpartbe•causethenaturalhostforthisinfection,themouse,ismoreeasilymanagedinthelabora•tory.Although,asillustratedthroughoutthissymposium,muchprogresshasbeenmadeinunderstandingthepathogenesisoftheinfectionsdescribedabove,this

6、reviewwillconcen•trateonMHVandinparticular,theneurotropicstrainsofthisvirus.Thefirststrainofmousehepatitisviruswasisolatedin1947fromaparalyzedmouseinacolonyofSwissCoronavirusesandArteriviruses,editedbyEnjuanesetal.PlenumPress,NewYork,1998503504S.Perlmanwh

7、itemiceatHarvardMedicalSchool(Cheever,etaI.,1949).Thisvirusinitiallycausedhindlimbparalysis,butonrepeatedpassagethroughmice,morevirulentvariants,whiehpredominantlycausedencephalitiswereselected.ThisviruswasnamedtheJHMvirus(JHMV)andsubsequentlyshowntobeaco
