4、theimage.Followingthat,theywouldbeshownthesamepicturewithcertainelementsaddedortakenawayandaskedtoidentifywhat’sdifferent.Veryoftentheindividualcouldrecallthelargeraspectsofthepicturebutcouldn’trecognizethesmallerchanges.Inthe1990s,researcherDanielSimonsconductedafascinatingstudyintochangeblindn

5、essthatmanypeoplefindunbelievable.InSimons’study,heaskedparticipantstowatchavideoofabasketballbeingpassedaroundbetweenseveralpeople,withaparticularfocusonthebasketballitself.Whentheexperimentwasover,Simonsfoundthatalargenumberofparticipantsweresofocusedonwatchingthebasketballbeingpassedaroundtha

6、ttheyfailedtonoticeamaninagorillasuitjumpingaroundinfrontofthecamera.It’simportanttonotethatthechangeinSimons’videowasn’tsubtle;thegorillaisveryobviouslytakingupmuchoftheframe.Simonsconcludedthatparticipantswereexperiencinginattentionalblindness,whichiswhenapersonfailstonoticeamajorchangebecause
