3、threeparts:theBigWildGoosePagoda,theDaCi'enTemple,andtheNorthSquareofBigWildGoosePagoda.BigWildGoosePagodaOriginallybuiltin652duringthereignofEmperorGaozongoftheTangDynasty(618-907),itfunctionedtocollectBuddhistmaterialsthatweretakenfromIndiabythehie
4、rarchXuanzang.XuanzangstartedofffromChang'an(theancientXian),alongtheSilkRoadandthroughdeserts,finallyarrivinginIndia,thecradleofBuddhism.Enduring17yearsandtraversing100countries,heobtainedBuddhafigures,657kindsofsutras,andseveralBuddharelics.Havingg
5、ottenthepermissionofEmperorGaozong(628-683),Xuanzang,asthefirstabbotofDaCi'enTemple,supervisedthebuildingofapagodainsideit.Withthesupportofroyalty,heasked50hierarchsintothetempletotranslateSanskritinsutrasintoChinese,totaling1,335volumes,whichheralde
6、danewerainthehistoryoftranslation.BasedonthejourneytoIndia,healsowroteabookentitled'PilgrimagetotheWest'intheTangDynasty,towhichscholarsattachedgreatimportance.Firstbuilttoaheightof60meters(197feet)withfivestories,itisnow64.5meters(211.6feet)highwith
7、anadditionaltwostories.Itwassaidthatafterthatadditioncamethesaying-'Savingalifeexceedsbuildingaseven-storiedpagoda'.Externallyitlookslikeasquarecone,simplebutgrandanditisamasterpieceofBuddhistconstruction.Builtofbrick,itsstructureisveryfirm.Insidethe
8、pagoda,stairstwistupsothatvisitorscanclimbandoverlookthepanoramaofXianCityfromthearch-shapeddoorsonfoursidesofeachstorey.OnthewallsareengravedfinestatuesofBuddhabytherenownedartistYanLibenoftheTangDynasty.Stelesbynotedcalligraphersalsogracethepagoda.
