3、orthSquareofBigWildGoosePagoda.BigWildGoosePagodaOriginallybuiltin652duringthereignofEmperorGaozongoftheTangDynasty(618-907),itfunctionedtocollectBuddhistmaterialsthatweretakenfromIndiabythehierarchXuanzang.XuanzangstartedofffromChang'an(theancientXian),alongtheSilkRo
4、adandthroughdeserts,finallyarrivinginIndia,thecradleofBuddhism.Enduring17yearsandtraversing100countries,heobtainedBuddhafigures,657kindsofsutras,andseveralBuddharelics.HavinggottenthepermissionofEmperorGaozong(628-683),Xuanzang,asthefirstabbotofDaCi'enTemple,supervise
5、dthebuildingofapagodainsideit.Withthesupportofroyalty,heasked50hierarchsintothetempletotranslateSanskritinsutrasintoChinese,totaling1,335volumes,whichheraldedanewerainthehistoryoftranslation.BasedonthejourneytoIndia,healsowroteabookentitled'PilgrimagetotheWest'intheTa
6、ngDynasty,towhichscholarsattachedgreatimportance.Firstbuilttoaheightof60meters(197feet)withfivestories,itisnow64.5meters(211.6feet)highwithanadditionaltwostories.Itwassaidthatafterthatadditioncamethesaying-'Savingalifeexceedsbuildingaseven-storiedpagoda'.Externallyitl
